[Okaeri Mone] Kaya's Letter Vol. 05 - Memorable Scenes (Week 18-20) & Behind the Scenes

Kaya's Letter Vol. 05
Memorable Scenes (Week 18-20) & Behind the Scenes

The original interview can be found here. I decided to translate all the Okaeri Mone contents. I'm in love with this drama and I'm afraid that these interview may be deleted after the series ended. Hence, I'm archiving all the interview before it's gone. I hope that my translation makes sense because it's been awhile since I translate something.

Disclaimer: I'm still a novice translator, hence my translation is not 100% accurate.

In this corner, we ask Kiyohara Kaya, who plays the heroine Nagaura Momone (Mone), what she is interested in. Somehow, the writing "Kaya's Letter" were handwritten by Kiyohara-san!

This issue, we are covering Kiyohara-san's memorable scenes in the last part of Tokyo Arc, Week 18 to 20. In addition, as a special feature, we asked him to look at the off-shot that the show's official SNS has posted so far, and talk about the stories behind them!

Week 18, Episode 88
The scene where Mone is watching Riko (Imada Mio)'s broadcast in the studio for Typhoon No.12 warning

This is the scene where Riko warns people about the typhoon on TV, based on the rainfall simulation image proposed by Mone.

The "floor director" Mone played in this scene would normally be sitting or squatting, but after consulting with the director, we decided to have her stand. Riko and Mone now have a sophisticated teamwork, so I thought it would be more comfortable for them to be in a position where they can see each other's faces in a tense situation.

I was also happy to see that they started calling each other "Riko-san" and "Mone" from week 18.

Week 19, Episode 91
The scene where Suganami (Sakaguchi Kentaro) proposes in the laundromat

Putting emotions before logic, Suganami talks like he's out of breath (laughs). At the scene, Sakaguchi-san and the director said, "This Suganami is strange, isn't he?". It was really fun to watch Sakaguchi-san's bold and careful acting.

In Mone's case, I think she would have been surprised if he had suddenly and calmly asked her to marry him, so maybe it was for the best. Mone was able to understand the sensei's feelings! It was transmitted too much (laughs).

Week 20, Episode 96
The scene where Mone bids farewell to Asaoka (Nishijima Hidetoshi) on her last day of work in Tokyo.

During the rehearsal, Nishijima-san said "We'll work together again soon, because we're under the same sky" and after saying that line, he was grinning so much. Influenced by that, I was grinning too and he said "Why are you laughing?" (laughs).

It's a beautiful scene where a disciple leaving while the mentor sending her off. I felt like I was being told to "Go out there and do your best". Mone is now confident in her work and is ready to take on a new challenge with hope. Asaoka-san, who has nurtured Mone to this point and watched over her, is truly an amazing person.

Here onward is the Special Project!

We asked Kiyohara-san to take a look at the off-shot photos we posted on our official SNS and talked about the behind-the-scene stories at the time.

Episode 9: Mone's last day in Forest Cooperative off-shot

It was a nice photo, but this Suganami... is just Sakaguchi-san, isn't it? (laughs). I didn't know he was posing like this, right behind me. A viewer replied, "Suganami-sensei's battle pose is probably a sign that he feels the same way as Mone, determined to do his best in Tome" (laughs). I hope so too!

Episode 15: The video call between childhood friends off-shot

It was a very exciting scene that connected Tokyo and Sendai. The screen on the phone was supposed to be a composite, but the staff did a great job and we were able to shoot the scene with the actual video connected.

Mitsuo (Koki Maeda), who used to be a rock star, became a rapper before we knew it. I remember everyone saying, "Isn't his hair band too thin?" (laughs).

Tsunematsu-chan's ad-libbed rap, which Shimizu-kun taught her, were also amazing. As soon as the cut was made, everyone clapped!

Episode 17: When Mone came to Tome at the end of the year off-shot

It looks so lively and fun! The Christmas tree hat that Kimura-san was wearing has a flickering light, and we were all saying, "That looks nice!". Denden-san also has a cute red nose, doesn't he? Mone is surrounded by kind people.

It was a scene where Mone announced that she was going out with Suganami, but in this off-camera shot, I'm holding hands with Sayaka-san (laughs). When Natsuki-san said "Mone, let's hold hands!", I was so happy!

Episode 20: The farewell scene with everyone at Shiomi-yu off-shot

Udagawa-san gave me this painting: The sea, mountains, and sky are beautifully connected, it's really beautiful, isn't it! The day before we shot this scene, the painter was working on the set. I'm going to display it in my office in Kesennuma and work hard while keeping Udagawa-san in mind.

I also like Suganami and Mone's picture that Natsu-san drew. It's displayed in Mone's room and I get a little embarrassed when I see it (laughs). It's so cute that Mone would display a picture of herself with the person she loves!

Stay tuned for the next volume!
