[Okaeri Mone] Kaya's Letter Vol. 01 - Memorable Scenes (Week 01-04)

Kaya's Letter Vol. 01
Memorable Scenes (Week 01-04)

The original interview can be found here. I decided to translate all the Okaeri Mone contents. I'm in love with this drama and I'm afraid that these interview may be deleted after the series ended. Hence, I'm archiving all the interview before it's gone. I hope that my translation makes sense because it's been awhile since I translate something.

Disclaimer: I'm still a novice translator, hence my translation is not 100% accurate.

In this corner, we ask Kiyohara Kaya, who plays the heroine Nagaura Momone (Mone), what she is interested in. Somehow, the writing "Kaya's Letter" were handwritten by Kiyohara-san!

This time, we asked her to tell us about her most memorable scenes from Week 01 to Week 04. Here are some behind-the-scenes stories from the filming!

Week 02, Episode 09
The scene where Mone encounters a thunderstorm in the forest and head for the shelter with Keisuke-kun (Akutsu Keito)

It took us two days to shoot the scene in the cold winter mountains with rain falling and even more intense rain falling with the equipment.  It was a cold and physically demanding scene! It was even more difficult for 10-years-old Akutsu-kun, wasn't it? Both Akutsu-kun and I were shy in some ways, but I thought "I shouldn't be shy here!". So I talked to him like how Mone does and encouraged each other during the shooting. I was happy that we were able to overcome the challenges together and become good friends in the end.

Akutsu-kun was also very happy when I gave him a 'mushroom strap' that I got from a capsule toy at the lodge. I wanted a maitake mushroom, but I got king oyster mushroom instead. So I gave it to him (laughs).

Week 03, Episode 13
The scene where Mone is playing in a brass band ensemble in junior high school

Mone is in charge of the saxophone but I had no experience, so I started taking lessons three months ago in July, but it was very difficult to get sound right until the teacher praised me. And then, on the day when all the members of the childhood friends get together for the first time, we suddenly practice the ensemble! Everyone was very cautious as we had just said "nice to meet you" to each other, but it was a lot of fun.

I've grown to love the saxophone so much that I want to keep it as a hobby. It would be nice to have another performance scene!

Week 04, Episode 18
The scene where a family quarrel is settled by blowing a whistle

The story begins with an argument between Michi (Makita Aju) and grandpa (Fuji Tatsuya) over the oyster farming, which leads to a family quarrel that includes dad (Uchino Seiyo). During that time, Mone remains silent. Mone doesn't have anything to say to interrupt them.

Meanwhile, she blows the whistle because her desire of wanting to stop the quarrel from getting out of control. When I read the script, I felt that Mone was very sad. The family saw it that way too and it all settled down in the end.

Week 04, Episode 20
The scene where Mone rides the ferry from Kameshima to Kesennuma island

In this scene, Mone noticed that the floating rafts that she sees rom the ferry are made of Japanese cedar and realized once again that the mountains and the sea are connected. It's a refreshing moment for Mone to refresh her spirit, but... it was a difficult scene as the wind was so strong!

The wind was so strong which made my hair look terrible that I thought, "Is a hair dryer coming from all directions, 360 degrees?". I'm really anxious to see how the footage turned out to be, but I hope it was alright (laughs).

Stay tuned for the next volume!
